Deborah Dolen talks about Water Issues and Conservation

It will never hurt you to understand your water source(s), the chemical make up of that water source, and how to store, filter, purify and/or sanitize water in situations of water shortages or boil water advisories. I find water a fascinating subject, beyond the most critical resource for a healthy life.   Deborah Dolen Images

Everyone thinks there is someone carefully watching our water supply and that is not very true.  The amount of pharmaceuticals alone being recycled into our water supply is astonishing. A good percentage of the flu does not come from your work mates, it could have came from your water supply just as easily. ~Deborah Dolen

The best rule to clean water in a total crises and no electric is 1) strain it 2) drop 8 drops of Clorox per gallon to sterilize it 3) run it through a Brita if you have one to remove the chlorine.  I would use 2 britas-one to strain it the first time and a second to rinse the sanitizer out.  Unless you have serious heat to boil it, Clorox is the only way to kill all organisms. It is always best to keep 30 gallons of distilled water on hand.  It is only .88 cents or so a gallon at WM.

Often sighted with her Katrina rescue dog Ringo Deborah lives on Sarasota Bay and enjoys all of the gifts the Gulf of Mexico has to offer, Donating to Wildlife is one of Deborah's biggest commitments, whether it is money, supplies, or her time. A graduate of Eckerd College, situated right on Tampa Bay, Deborah became interested in oceanography and how our water ways work.  Florida wildlife has a very intimate relationship with the Gulf of Mexico.
